Ive just acquired a Mk1 Clarkson Tool and Cutter Grinder and would like to obtain a decent copy of the operator’s manual. Does anyone know how to get one please? I have tried to follow links in the Bedroom Workshop site but I can’t log is and so cannot access them.

      Any suggestions please?

      Thank you

I have a pdf copy of the manual, if that’s any use.  No hard copy, nor the machine itself, sadly.  PM me your email address if you would like a copy to peruse.

There’s a single copy on Keith Rucker’s site, but only of the main manual
          http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/12494/27936.pdf

Something odd going on at the moment accessing the site, both directly or via archive.org so good luck.

Re Bedroom Workshop; I’ve been trying to contact the owner for some time regarding access, and I also had a few documents which might have interested him, but not been successful thus far.
Does anyone here know Steven Vine?

I have the full hard copy of the manual. If you pm me with an email address I will scan the pages you need and email them to you. From memory, because I have not looked at it in years, it has quite a few pages so would take a while to fully scan. (I can’t check how many at the moment as I am sending this post from a hospital bed.)

Derek has been in touch by PM and I’ve emailed him my pdf copies (33 pages by the way). No doubt he will post on here if what I’ve sent is not what he is after.  I think my copy was downloaded from Keith Rucker’s site – but is was two years ago, so I can’t be sure.

I have three or four pdf Clarkson Manuals of different vintages. They aren’t all the same. There are different descriptions and pictures covering some operations. Which can be handy when you don’t quite follow the description in one version.

Thank you all for your comments and especially John Hinkley who quiockly sent me a scanned copy of the manual. I’ll study it before bed and no doubt it will help my insomnia!

My machine has come with quite a lot of the attachments, collars and sleeves etc so it will take me a while to work out what each one is for.

On a sligghtly different tack, what it doesn’t have is the drill grinding attachment which would be very useful but I gather they are difficult to get hold of and expensive. Has anyone made a replica or obtianed drawinmgs of it as it doesn’t seem too difficult to copy?

                  Thanks again.

I have a scanned copy of the manual for the drill point & tap lead sharpener.

If you just want to sharpen standard point drills the actual construction of a replica Clarkson drill grinding attachment could be somewhat simplified for home construction. It’s really only question of extracting the appropriate angles and offsets.

I’ve had an enlarged version for sharpening drills put around 1 1/4″ on the round-tu-it list for several years now but have gotten no further than buying the 6 jaw chuck due to more urgent needs.

Appropriately sized 6 jaw chucks with long type jaws can be gotten at acceptable prices from the import suppliers so it’s just a question of finding someone with 3D expertise to do the drawings. trying too do it in 2D its quite difficult to figure out the angles and offsets as the originate in free space.

I really should take another look.

Thanks again for all your help and yes Clive it would be good to find some drawings. I am afaroid that I don’t have any CAD skills but I wonder if there is anyone within about 50 miles of Derby that has the drill grinder and would allow me to measure it and take photos. I might then be able to work out how to make a working replica.

Unless you are intent on producing a replica Clarkson workshop there are lots other drill grinding attachments. Apart from the convenience of positioning the jig to all intents and purposes the setup is like a fixed plain grinder as the important motions are part of the jig.
A V-block or collet set is more often used than a 6-jaw.
The Brierly might be worth looking at if you want a complex professional one to copy.
Also keep an eye on what David George is doing with his cutter grinder modifications.

Hi Derek, though more than 50 miles from you I have the paperwork you need. I also have a Clarkson drill grinder/tap lead attachment and 2 Brierley drill grinders, a ZB 25 and a ZB 32, the latter will do up to 1.25″/32mm. You are welcome to inspect/measure any or all of them. I’m at Hunstanton. Noel.

Noel, thank you. Occasionally we come that way on holiday but no plans yet!

When you say you have the paperwork do you mean yoiu have some drawings?

                              Thanks

Derek, Having a natural aversion to blunt drills Etc I had bought a Clarkson Mk1 and had intended to try and make a copy of the drill grinder. Having at some expense spoken for the Clarkson attachment I was then to get the 2 Brierleys, all a long story ! No I do not have any drawings but I do have the various hand books and tables. The clarkson has 3 or 4 cams that are important to it’s use, these I do have. I also have a radius grinding attachment and an air bearing flute grinding attachment . Noel.
