I have recently acquired a clarke cl500m lathe. But the switch had been ripped off and the manual is as good as a chocolate tea pot for rewiring it.
Can anybody give me detailed wiring instructions on what goes where or better pics of behind the switch panel.

It is the standard setup. With revers switch and push start stop relay switch and 4 wires to the motor.

      Many thanks in advance.

Can you post a photo of the switch? it might help. By the way, I've got a fixed steady for your machine, if you are interested in it.

          Carl.

                Hello Simon,

Right…if your switch is the one shown in Ady's pictures above, then it is similar to the one on my Chester Mill/Drill. I rewired this and drew a diagram. Unfortunately I am currently aboard a ship off the coast of Angola…and my diagram is in my workshop in the UK….not in the notebook I brought with me as I'd thought. Dreadfully sorry about that.

I may be able to fathom it out and rest the details from my creaking memory, if I give the photos a damn good stare. So I'll try that….

The steady is brand new and in it's box still, never been used. You can have it for £40 plus postage. If your lathe is as well built as the steady then it can't be too bad. It certainly has got a fair old swing. I should point out that I won't be back in the UK until the 11th of July, which will be the earliest I can send you the steady.

If you drop me a PM I'll let you have my email address and then we can sort out getting you your steady.

                Kind Regards,

                Carl.

I can explain the principle these work which might help.

If there is a rupture type emergency stop switch the mains goes in through that. Rupture as the force on the button is sent straight to the contacts so they may open even if slightly welded.

The general idea is that the whole lot defaults to off if the power fails so the on button energises the really coil and contacts on the relay latch the coil on. The stop switch is in the relay latch circuit to that when it's pushed it deactivates the relay. The machine is powered via other relay contacts. It should provide both live and neutral to the machine via the relay

2 arrangement are shown here less powering the machine but check what I have just said in case there is an error. Doesn't look like there is

Hi, just received my new switch for my WEMAS lathe/mill which was a precursor of the Clarke CL500, same thing just way older and made in Germany…had to keep repairing failing switch so happy to find a replacement. Even happier to find this site that can help wiring it. The new switch is the same as yours in the photo…KEBU JD3..looks identical but came with a bunch or pre wiring (( see photos in my album)). So was doubling checking if the wiring diagram you posted did work for you… your post is from a few ago so thought it prudent to do the double check…. thanks in advance…..

Hi I am looking for some help and advice. I have recently been given a Clark CL500M Mill & Lathe. However I am having problems with the electrical side and there seems to be a complete lack of information other than on this forum.

My current concern is with the Relay Start Switch. All the diagrams I have seen show the coil and 4 seperate contacts that are held closed by the coil. My coil (although looking like those above in ADY1's pictures) only holds contacts 13 & 14, 23 & 24 closed while the push start momenterily closes 33 & 34 and 43 & 44 on press.

I am leaning towards my relay is faulty, however I dont want to spend the £50 with clarke if it isnt the relay and I have a different fault causing my lathe not to run. I guess I am wondering if anyone on here can confirm that when there coil is energised that all the contacts are definatly held closed?

                                    Thanks in Advance!

Hi everyone, first post here and hoping this thread is still live.

I too am in the process of wiring up a CL500M (been in bits in a garage for years since buying it cheap!

The situation is all wires are unmarked, sigh, and many disconnected.

The motor is totally disconnected and start capacitor removed (previous owner thought it was faulty so I've bought a new one.)

The start stop and reverse switch is mercifully still connected.

However, there is a secondary Unimac NVR switch attached to the machine but all wires cut off inside the box.

Also no sign of the centrifugal switch for the start capacitor…
