Hi

I am looking to purchase a spare part for my Clarke CL500M lathe, please see photos in the attachment. As you can see the part has shattered and pieced back together for better viewing.

Due to lack of detail on the Clarke pdf file I am unable to zoom in for the correct part I require. As such I have now received 2 incorrect parts from machine mart. These parts were from the gear train. 32 Spline Housing HT3000300232 and 18 Hex Socket Sliding Bush HT3000300118.

The auto feed is not engaging on my lathe which is why I assumed the part to be under the gear train category (PDF). Perhaps this may not be the case? I and another engineer have looked through the PDF file and we cannot see this part listed. I am hoping someone can help me with this as it is a very important that the gear train/auto feed is working correctly on my lathe.

I have emailed Clarke and received no reply. I have also emailed machine mart but as above have received incorrect parts.

Since the CL500M looks similar to the Cheater Model B, you could try to find what you want from Chester.

I managed to get this part from machine mart in the end. it was listed under the wrong part. good job really as Clarke never answered any of my emails.

Machine Mart are the retail operation of Clarke International.

Clarke International also supply their equipment to most tool dealers in the UK and Europe.

They are usually very good at sourcing even very obscure spare parts for older equipment.

Now you've got the spare, how about 'making a spare' that is if you have means to cut the spline. Failing that; order another as 'spare for the spare'. First off though, what caused it to shatter; rectify that or you may end up with the same situation?.

The lathe was bought as spares or repair. It was from a teaching trust so I think some student must have done this somewhere along the line. I took a bit of a gamble when buying. Hopefully its paid off.

This part is cast. I think it is made like this to act as a weak link and not damage any other parts further in the lathe? It was the last one left in stock otherwise I would have got a spare. My lathe is running now and the screw threading is working. I just have to make a space for it to live before I can get to use it properly.

I am looking to change over to motor to variable speed motor. I have emailed Newton Tesla but have had no reply. Has anyone done this to their lathe if so could you recommend a company for a variable speed motor or any links/info for me to view etc .

Yes, I have a Newton Tesla drive – in green because it was bought from Warco complete with motor when they sold the same lathe. I have had it about 7/8 years, and it is a worthwhile improvement, makes the running very smooth and quiet.

A cheap and to my view very good way to motorize lathes ,is to use an industrial sewing machime motor.

Apart from the cl300. The CL430 and larger lathes haven't been listed in the Machine Mart website for at least 5 years. No spares are available for those lathes. sorry to say. (I work there)

Sorry I should have put an update on the forum much earlier.

I did manage to source the part I needed through Clarke and get the lathe up and running. Since this time, I have learnt through, James90, that there are no spare parts available for this lathe.

I would seriously advise anyone thinking of buying any new lathe to check that spare parts are available.

Clarke usually supply for the time the product is in the catalogue and roughly 5 years after, depending on how many spares they have in stock. It's not an exact science. The lathes you mention were made in China in one factory, after a bit of research. I found out that that factory had gone to the wall, and Clarke didn't bother to place orders with anyone else.

Somebody mentioned that the part is cast but its more likely to be sintered as its easier to make in quantity and that's probably why its broken in that manner.
