After 30 years or more, I have defeated the shock proof calliper as it fell from the bench. After the fall, it was reading +030″ at the zero setting. I have stripped it all down, cleaned it and the best I can get it to is +010″ at the zero setting.  The next step is to reset the pointer, but how do I remove the glass / bezel ??

Some calipers have a sprung loaded rear needle pivot for that very reason of dropping it so you should be able to disengage the needle pinion and reset. HOPEFULLY.

See the photo below of my dial indicator.  Same construction.  The knurled ring is separate from the other ring piece.  It pulls off, but may require some persuasion.  The second ring piece is bolted down and will cause damage if you pry on that.  Only the knurled part comes off.
