What size independent chuck would anyone suggest for a Myford ML10. I know a 150mm is often used on the 7 series what is this too large for the 10 series.

 

I email Myford and they came back as below.

As you can see , no answer to my question re size or cost which sould be always available to them. If an item is out of stock then fair enough. I just do not think much of the reply. Maybe they just want us to buy from China. Further note the spelling!

The standard 4-jaw independant chuck for the ML10 is 4 1/2″ (115mm) – the one with mine was a Pratt Light Duty model ( I dread to think the price of this new these days!)

The 7 series 4 -jaw is 6 ” and is not suitable for the ML 10.

I did pick up a 100mm ( 4″) Pratt Burnerd 4 jaw independant ,secondhand, a while ago and this is very good for the more delicate parts. I’m surprised at your reply from Myford – you must have caught them at a bad time. I’ve always found them very helpful and patient – even with some of my fool questions!

I expect Myford where on their way to the Bristol show.

I bought a 5in. 4 jaw threaded for Myford from J&L Industrial.

Might be ok for an ML10. You probably can’t pick up a 4 1/2in. chuck now.

Sorry to hijack the thread somewhat but my 5″ 4 Jaw S/C chuck on it’s backplate weighs a ton (OK maybe not, it just feels like it sometimes). Is there any reason that it can’t be left in situ on my Super 7?

No not unless you want to hold hex or irregular stock or use the faceplate or dead centre. But its OK to use it for round and sq work.

I often use a 6 inch 4 jaw on my Myford Speed 10 but you have to be careful to ensure the jaws do not protrude much beyond the body or they will hit the bed. For that reason I would buy a 5 inch one for this machine. I like the ones that have the body threaded and do not use a backplate ,since they have less overhang.
