Hi,
A friend of mine came to me with a problem. He has bought some kind of chinees made minature lathe for smaller metal work. To the lathe he picked up a 4 jaw individual chuck, but he haven’t been able to find a suitable back plate to mount it on.
I have a semi serious lathe (TOZ SN50) on which I easily can make one for him and the process seems fairly straightforward. The plate should be about 4″/100mm diameter and on the back of it an extending piece with external threds (30 or 32mm I don’t remeber out of my head).
What is bugging me is that cutting this down from a 105 forged roundstock I happen to have laying around will be a considerable ammount of material removal just to get the extending piece down from 105 to 32 mm.
I remeberd reading in an old (sometime 2007) issue of MEW, an article called “A face plate for uncle George” or something similar. In this article or some other article in this issue it is mentioned that “blanks” of cast metal are sold but I haven’t been able to find any of them.
My question is, does anyone in here know where to find them or have any other good suggestions on how to make a mount like this.
Many thanks in advance
Jockum
