      Hi guys,

I have noticed from pictures some traction engines are been fired with atall extension to the chimney, im guessing this increases the draught, as my blower has now disintegrated! Is it feasible to fire up my 3" scale traction engine using this extension only? Or is it purely when stationary after been fired up?

      Your comments always welcome! Cheers

      Mark

Quite a few people just use an extension, particularly on the larger scale traction engines when raising steam. Use it from the start as you would a blower, you can even light a bit of soaked rag in the smokebox to get some hot gasses going up the chimney to start it drawing.

Remove once there is enough pressure to use the steam blower or leave in place to keep the smoke out of your face when driving.

I have also seen extensions with a pipe comming in at the side at an angle pointing upwards which can be plumbed to an external blower with some flexi hose.

              Hello Mark,

When I was a young man we would loosly fill the smokebox of the engine with dry straw, set light to it, close the door and you're away, I've seen it done with a 3" traction engine with a 4ft extention chimney and that worked alright.

              Regards,

              Bob Youldon
