I have a cheap grinder that I have converted to a scotch brite type wheel on the fast side, and I was wondering if it could be used as a sharpening station if I fitted a diamond wheel on the slow side where the wet stone is.

Looking to grind lathe tools to start with. I can use the other grinder to get the rough shape then use this to do the final grinding

I know that I would also need to make a rest of some sort (design to be looked at later)

My grinding bench set up needs reorganising

      clean up (3)

      And the grinder in question

First measure the runout in all directions.

I will check it. I did think of that but forgot to put in my original post. It is just that the slow side was sitting doing nothing. As can be seen, it is mounted on a separate board so that it can be turned around on the unit which is also on wheels so I can move it around.

I had one of those about 20yrs ago. The slow side was so untrue you could not even sharpen a chisel or plane iron on it and I don’t just mean the stone needed dressing the spindle was just wobbly.

Make some new washers for the grinding wheel spindle the ones suplied are cheep pressed type and you can make ones which are wider on the spindle diamiter which stopps the wobble.

Similar to these but measure your grinder spindles.

The first thing I want to look at is the gear box and what they describe as bearings before I check any run out of the shaft.

And yes I will check the flanges and as you say David make new ones, I did not think of those at the time of posting

From memory the bearings were not good, under load the spindle jumped about. In which case flanges are not really going to help.

This grinder came with plastic wheel washers on the slow moving wheel. They were of course changed. The bearings were Oilite bushes.

                    New Set-up

                    Regards

                    Gray,

Rather than a diamond wheel, which might benefit from a higher RPM, how about a flat diamond 6″ lap.
When I was needing to sharpen some carbide scrapers, I made a holder for some eBay flat disc laps.
Essentially a lump of spare cast iron to be held in a lathe chuck and spun at something like 300RPM, obviously with the bed suitably protected as well as me.
A few high strength magnets hold the lap in place.
                      Search eBay for something like
“6-inch Diamond Coated Flat Lap Wheel Grinding Sanding Polishing Disc” to see the laps.

All a bit of a lash up here for a photo, proudly displaying a worn out disc and no dust protection, but it worked well enough
