Unsure what title to give this post so decided to go  with ‘changes’, last night the wife and myself went to our local Arena to see a Irish group it finished just past 20.00 and as I felt a bit  peckish ask the wife if she fancied a bag of chips. Sounded a good idea not had chips from a chippy for ages so off we went to the local chippy only to find it closed at 22.00 tried a couple more same closed so after getting home disappointed no chips started to think why the chippies all closed came to the conclusion it was because all the local pubs had closed, no more turning out a 23.00 into the local chippy for supper. Anyone have any other changes ?

I tried to get fish and chips on a Saturday teatime a while back, I went round five local chippies and not one of them was open. I am sure they always used to be a few years ago.

            Hello Harry,

Two hours(ish) to find a chippy.  You must have been determined to have chips.

They’re affected by spiralling costs like everyone else, but to a greater degree (cooking oil, energy, cod etc) so they have to open when they know there will be trade.

The cost of a ‘fish supper’ these days is too high for many compared to the cheap meal it always used to be, so trade is down. To us, its very much an occasional treat now only. Many chip shops, like pubs simply can’t make enough profit and are closing. Sign of the times.

And when they are open nothings ready!

Yes Mike, I also think the cost of a fish supper is too high for what it is, despite the rising cost of the overheads.  I’ve often wondered if a little less profit would mean more customers and more profit in the long run.  I’m no expert, just a thought.

There are usually alternatives available, kebab, Chinese, Indian, pizza etc. often into the early hours. Perhaps these appeal more to the younger generation, or those who use a food delivery app rather than the traditional fish ‘n’ chips? Certainly kebab shops and Chinese take-aways sell chips if that’s all you want.
