        The carbide centre makes the very first pop for me, up to a millimeter.
        Then depending on the job ahead, I take it from there.
         
        I always use the centre in the tailstock/headstock, set the job up around it, and pop any holes required on the lathe itself.
        I found other methods unreliable…(and sometimes very annoying   ).
