Made a start on the spindle . I'm not going down the thick wall pipe/tube route . I laid my hands on a chunk of stainless steel of some sort (looks like it was an old roller ) because it has a 1" bore (handy) so I turned it down to press fit inside the the 3" pipe I'm using plus epoxy glue wink.

I have a question ,I have two tapered roller bearings . One's a Timken slightly smaller 56 mm od but a better quality bearing than the other one which is 62 mm od .Will it matter if I put the Timken on the bottom ..

How are you powering this head ,using original type setup from main motor or separate motor.?

Ive trying to figure what your doing. smiley if that pipe youve pressed in is 3" diameter what are you putting in that great big hole at the top of your photos?

Have you  a rough sketch to show what your doing?

It’s all in my head Mark lol. I’ve cut a 1 1/4″ plate to rough diemensions chucked it up and turned it down to a press fit I’ve also roughed the bore . I’ll post up some more photos .Photos are in my albums now . I’m not the best at explaining 😉.

Well last night I had a trial run with the vertical head , I’ve only mounted the motor temporarily. Being from an agricultural background😉😁 I’m pleased as punch with how it performed. Started on a piece of aluminium then a piece of steel using a 10mm roughing endmill 50tho cut no problem . 😁😁😁

Been using my homemade vertical head quite a lot recently ,I have a wee chuckle to myself everytime I use it . I’m mean ,compared to how other people have gone about theirs ,mine is very agricultural in comparison. But… I can use a fly cutter ,carbide end mills which I believe can be very fragile in certain operations,I have about 0.001 run out on the spindle ,so using smaller than say 6mm won’t be an option I would’ve have thought. My only complaint about is getting the head trammed,it’s very close just now but I’d like it a wee bit closer.
