CCMT Lathe Inserts

I recently decided to use up my CCMT09 inserts – I normally use CCMT06. I fitted one to my tool holder and immediately found it was too thick.  A little investigation on the web showed that all modern tooling uses the T3 inserts (5/32″ thick) rather than the 03 (1/8″ thick) inserts for which my tool holder is designed and the 03 inserts are now almost unobtainable.

Does anybody know when or why the change was made as all the other CCMT sizes of tooling does not appear to have changed thickness?

I’m surprized you did not have problems with the overall size a 06 are a lot smaller than 09 and don’t fit the same holders in perspective of thickness

06 size inserts tend to be 02 in the code (2.38mm) while the larger 09 size tend to be T3 in the code 3.97mm

You could go with CNMG 09 03** if you need that thickness for a clamp type holder as the neutral ones are more common in that thickness
