Hello all ,I've built a few 1 cylinder 2 cylinder & a 4 cylinder 4 stroke engines & ran them all on vapor type carbs which works well enough for demo purposes but they don't have much power . The engine i am working on at the moment is about 20cc.I want some usable power and a throttle on this one. I have bought plans for a MM carb by W Tomkinson from My Hobbies Store, has any one out there built this one.is it a good one. Maybe i would be better buying a ready made one . All comments much appreciated.

Malcom Stride's carb that he uses on the Lynx and the recently described Bobcat/Jaguar should be suitable for that size engine and I've also seen it used on a Hoglet V-twin which are 15cc, 15/7.5cc and 25cc.

Edgar Westbury's carb for Kiwi (15cc) is a little work of art, it even includes a float chamber.

Hi all sorry I've been so slow thanking you for your advice. I decided to build the Tomkinson carb as I had the drawings, it proved not very successful. I have just finished Gerry Howell's 2 needle throttle ,it's doing the business just fine, although it is very small and more intricate than I am used to. Thank you for your help again, It's much appreciated.

Hello bogs Just been on ebay ,see what you mean about price, would even the smallest not be to large and out of scale for a model engine. Gerry Howall's one measures 17mm x 17mm for the block with adjustment screws sticking out from it. I am very reluctant to buy anything I can make myself, that's why I started model engineering, its part of the challenge. I make everything I can although I draw the line as regards the ignition & electronics.

If you are going to buy a carb then for that size engine look at a RC carb, does not have to be OS, one of the far eastern copies will do and cost a bit less than Bogs size which is a bit more than slightly larger at 140cc engine not 20cc

The Firefly that was in ME about a year ago has a simple carb that works well, The builder used it to fly a RC plane, have a look at my build to see whats involved, plans are on the net.
