I called into cromwells they did not recognise the make of insert and had nothing like it for size. So I came away empty handed. I think I will buy a parting off tool from Cromwells it may be more expensive initially but if I want inserts or parts for it I can just call into my local branch and talk to the Guy face to face. All I have got now is a load of bits that are no good to me with out forking out more money. I will have a look round Ruforth on Saturday and if I get no joy there its Cromwells on Monday.

Can you put some pictures of these inserts in a folder for us to look at?

I would like to see a picture of the Holder to be honest. At least then I will know what the OP is looking for.

Bit like asking "where do I buy Oil Filters" but not letting on which car they are for. Doomed to failure.

The parting off tool is one of RDG tools own make. Its a 10mm holder with a 19mm blade it came with two 3mm carbide inserts.

Both inserts shattered in the first hour of use parting off a piece of 3/4"stainless steel bar stock. I sharpened a HSS parting tool and finished the job off with that. If I could part it of with a HSS cutter then the carbide tips should of done the job.

I do not want to buy any more of these tips so I bought a different companies after asking my question here about different companies being different size inserts. I now have two inserts that do not fit the tool. Cromwell do not recognise the broken tips and don't have that size.So I am stuck with a holder no inserts to fit. I have two inserts from a different supplier that don't fit the holders blade. At the moment I am just wasting money and getting no were.

I don't know how to post pictures its to complicated on here.

Not surprised they did not fit you bought 2mm tips from Chronos and have a holder for 3mm. The RDG ones look like GTN-3

Firstly I would ask – As opposed to what?

Because it is just the same as every other forum essentially. What you should have said is "can someone help me post a pic?" Plenty would have helped.
PM me your email address and I will contact you and you can send the pics to me by return if you want and I will put them up for you

You will get one from Ruforth, however if the one you have is GTN3 it should work, as I said before you are welcome to come and try one at my workshop, and see how easily it handles 316 stainless and even A2 stainless bolts, at least that way you will know what to buy.

By the way the ones sold at Ruforth arent cheap but they are good.

Every other forum I visit has a search bar underneath the box you write your post in I just select a picture from my desk top and insert it into the post it takes about ten seconds.

I am not bothered how much they cost as long as they work. I am not looking for cheap I don't mind paying for stuff that works. Thanks for the invitation. I will take your advice and check Ruforth out on Saturday I will go early then carry on to York for the day with the Wife.

The lady concerned is called Jenny ( see web for JB cutting tools of dronsfield ). Her parting tools are good and usually very reasonably priced. She , or her son, are usually there unless there's a major show on.

words of warning re Rufforth- go water proof and wear boots.

If Jenny can't help then there's a guy from Sheffield who's always there, think it's Anchor tools his firm. He usually has complete parting blades and inserts.

Got it my parting tool blade is GTN3 19mm high. I guess most of you had all ready told me that. Well got there in the end. I am going to invest in a GTN2 blade then I can use either size insert. Thanks for the input. I am off to learn how to part off properly. Cheers.

The main reason for carbide parting inserts grenading is that they mustn't be below centre. If they're below centre at the end of the cut, the work climbs up over them and simply pulls the end off the tip. A few (up to 4) thou above centre will protect the tip unless you're on a really rigid setup, when you can use less. Then They'll cut very well.

                                Hi Dave

A Proably obvious suggestion is to take the blade and old tip with you to Jenny

Have had some tips that have slid in further than expected before from othe suppliers

But the biggest surprise to me, was that I had always read Shaun's nom-de-plume as "Involute Curve" … Clearly it is not: Which just goes to show that we see what we expect to see, rather than what's actually there!

Thanks for that tip I was told previously to line them up central to the work that could explain why they went boom.

I think I have got this tool holder and carbide insert thing sorted now. I have acquired several different holders and boxes of different inserts. A couple of different size parting blades and different size carbide parting inserts. Just need a project now.

Build a 3D printer, and give the lathe to a museumcheeky. Sort out the most suitable tool size, probably one that is fairly narrow, anything over 3 mm you probably don't need. When I started, my parting tool was a bit of power hacksaw blade. Ian S C

I went to Scorton on Saturday no sign of any body selling any thing to do with Lathe tooling. There was a Lady there selling length's of bar stock in all sorts of different materials and profiles so not a total waste of time.
