      Hi,

I am auctioning off several complete sets of castings for model IC engines and would like to give people here a heads up when I do so.  Can I ask whether it is permissible to put up a post with a link to the eBay auctions and also some pix etc ?  If so then should I choose the IC Engines forum or is another preferable ?

I will obviously not do this if it is not permissable.

      Thanks,

      Mike

Don’t know about rules but if you want to offer it to the locals there are the classifieds on this site, and in ME mag.

          Hi Bazyle,

I see the classified ads but have already put up an eBay auction and wondered wheter a post here linking to it would be in order ?

          Thanks,

          Mike

Nothing in the rules saying no (“Help & FAQs” you could have looked yourself). I’d go ahead and do it. If a moderator doesn’t like it, he’ll say so …. and perhaps tell you where it’s covered in the rules.

It was done on the old site.

A bit of an unsaid rule that stops a flood of people just posting to promote their ebay sales so generally not accepted. Even more so from people who are new to or not regular posters on the forum.

Those links that do get posted are usually by someone other than the seller commenting on a listing not promoting it.

The difficulty with unsaid rules is that they catch people out. Either they post and get a black mark etc in consequence, or they don’t post, and someone else does, and they lose out.

That seems to me a grossly unfair way to run things. How about a speed limit which applies where someone thinks it is a good idea but this remains unrecorded? There is one where I live!

How about this? A book shop is clearing out copies of my book. I know this, and I want to tell this forum as they may well be interested. I make no money from sales of my book, so can I, or not?

I have quite enough nonsense in my life already. I don’t want more from a forum, thanks.

Would that be ‘Workholding for Machinists” Tim ?

                  … I must have a look around

Sorry, Michael, I was using a ‘book of mine’ as an example, to show how the secret rules can cause real problems. If you would like a copy, foc, just send me a direct message and it will be posted. Because I like what you do!

A time when I think it is acceptable is for example asking

                      What the heck is this?

                      eBay item number:305284339683

VINTAGE UNKNOWN LATHE BENCH VICE CLAMP HONING SHARPENING MYSTERY TOOL RECORD ?

Bazyle, FWIW it looks similar to a holder I’ve seen from an automotive valve re-facer / grinder; I think the little template /gauge might be for setting seat-face angles?

..tho’ always a chance it’s for grinding taps..
