Even kilo and mega pascals leave us unsatisfied.

I don’t see why. There are 15 psi to one atmosphere, and 10 atmosphere to one MPa. What makes psi so much better? The name might not roll off the tongue, but if that’s the only quibble a new name would surely solve that.

Sorry Gray, my measurements are a bit coarser, I work to four thou to the point one. Hope the O/P hasn’t become too confused due to some of the drivel. Use what you’re happy with and enjoy it as a HOBBY.

At the end of the day it’s all about money ! NOT yours or mine but in industry – who is going to pay to change all the production machinery and everything else that goes with it ? The change in plumbing from 1/2″ to 15mm was bad enough, try and get an adaptor for 1/2″ to 15mm for copper pipework of the 70s, now. Why have hydraulics and pipe threads stuck with various iterations of imperial,  as above, cost of change plus little or no real benefit.

As engineers does it really matter whether we use a 1/2″ or a 12mm bolt and nut ? The tensile strength is more important ?

          Ah well. Noel.

Let’s move on from this metric /imperial argument and adopt the firkin/foot/fortnight system

              Hi Ian,

I take your point but I only work to close tolerances when they are needed.

Unlike some of my Peers who would surface, and cylindrical grind all of their work. I much prefer the milled surface with only the working faces ground. It is the same with turning for example the part of a shaft which does not support a ball race etc. The bit in between the journals does nothing so why take time to get a really good finish.

I can accept any unit to work with, including “Groats” , “Cubits”, Planck’s” or whatever, they are all just a means of measurement. Every dimension has an equivalent. Whether the name of the dimension is liked is a different matter.

              Regards

              Gray,
