Anyone happen to know where i might buy small amounts of c95 spring steel strip, or recommend a similar obtainable steel for making small leaf springs ?

I've had success in the past with a company who supplied spring steel to makers of prosthetic limbs. Unfortunately, the supplier that I used in Shefield is no longer trading but there must be others that specialise in that sort of thing.

Thanks Brian, there must be someone selling spring steel. After all springs are a common enough component of a lot of projects.

Without knowing the size, would the steel from a pillar drill return spring be suitable? I think I have seen them for sale on eBay in the past.

Well i would need to know the exact type of steel in that spring Steve. It would have to be annealed , worked and then rehardened and tempered. I think you can use o1 steel for springs, but i would like to use the correct type of steel. Some of the hobby supply stockists must have it.

Ronan, I don't know what sort of size spring you require but these people supply replacement clock springs and may have something you could use.

I have found this company who supply spare parts for muzzleloaders, flintlocks and all that sort of thing. They sell 1 foot lengths of spring steel for a reasonable price.

Reeves do quite a few sections of flat spring steel ideal for making leaf springs, its annealed so you can bend it and drill as needed then heat treat

I have some material spare , I used it to make the leaf springs for the locomotive which I am building .

Just an addendum to this, i came across a blog of an english gunsmith who works in America, repairing very high end british shotguns. He has in the course of his work to make and fit and fit leaf springs. The steel he uses is plain old 01, also known as drill rod or gauge plate. He of course hardens and tempers the metal to spring temper. To see his blog google vicknairrestorations.
