Butch locomotive

Hi, I have a question for anyone who owns a butch locomotive. I am finding my butch to be very slow on getting up to steam, when it gets to about 60psi with the drain cocks just starting to blow steam and the blower 3/4 on. On opening the regulator I find that a mix of water and steam blows from the chimney. This clears but is this correct, is the butch a dirty locomotive.

When you first open the regulator the cylinders will be cold and much of the steam will condense, hence water and steam from the chimney, quite normal. As the cylinders warm up only steam will be emitted, if water continues to flow you may have overfilled the boiler, eventually this should stop.

I have a butch and as Andrew has said from cold it will blow condensate for a few seconds before things warm up. As a rule they are a good steaming locomotive with plenty of power for their size. Dirty ! No more so than any other, keep the tubes clean, use good coal and clean rain water or deionised. Good Luck. Noel.

You mention the drain cocks starting to blow steam, and then refer to opening the regulator. The cocks shouldn’t be blowing with the regulator shut, is it leaking?
