Hi all, hope I'm in the right place, but this is my first posting, so be gentle.

I currently do a lot of silver soldering using a mini, handheld gas torch. (Iroda PT-500). It has to be refilled from the little pressurised containers used to refill cigarette lighters etc, which proves quite expensive.

I'm looking for a cheaper method of refilling the torch. As a caravanner I use two- 7Kg butane bottles and wondered if anybody knows of an adaptor that would allow me to refill my handheld gas torch directly from these?

        Hope you can help

          Hi Mark,

I do the same for small objects using a 'cooks blowtorch' from Aldi which cost about a fifth of the same product as when it is sold for workshop use. The Range do one even cheaper.

Gas used to be just £1 for a canister at tesco, but they don't sell it online anyomore. Not sure if they still sell it in store.

In principle an adaptor would be do-able, although the challenge is to move liquid gas across – a more hazardous exercise.

However, I understand that refilling from large vessels needs a licence.

Hi Neil, Thanks for the information.

I did try the Calor gas people, but they didn't respond.

Will have a look in our local Tesco Extra Superstore and see if they still sell the cheap cartridges.

            Kind regards

            Mark

I have always found the small canisters in the open markets, there is usually a chap who sells roll-up machines and papers and other assorted smoking apparatus. He will also advertise watch batteries etc.

              Usually pay a £1.00 for a can.

The DIY sheds sell butane gas canisters for use with plumbers torches. They have a screw fitting.

Bruce Engineering sell an adapter (£12.90) which I use to refil my small torch.

                  Hmm interesting calculation:

200ml of Ronson lighter gas is £1

635ml of blowtorch gas is £3.99.

So… £12.90 buys a more expensive way of filling the small torch. Perhaps an adapter to fill teh blowtorch with lighter gas is needed

Yes but the OP wants to use a 7kg bottle which costs about £20 to refil which works out at 28p/100mls.

And most blowtorch gas is a propane /butane mix so liekly costs a bit more and gives a longer run without presure drop.
