Having retired late I hoped to start a traction engine project. However health has meant a change in plans so I have cheated and bought at auction a very well made 2" Thetford. I am looking for some help.

I intend to run on air to start but would like advice on filling the boiler to make sure the water jacket is full. I cannot see a hand water pump. The engine came with a bicycle pump which may or may not be part of the plan.

        regards Brian.

HI Brian, I'm a little suprised that it doesn't have a hand pump and assume it has both an injector and a crank driven pump. Is there any adaptor for the bike pump that indicates how it connects? You should examine th epipework for the pump to see if there is a point on the water feed that has a T point or valve. You can push water in through an existing pump with another pump as it just forces its way through the non-return valves. Aternatively disconnect the injector as you won't be using it and feed in through its clack valve.

Is this the type found with a quick google. You could try contacting the website woner for advice on a particular model. Looks like there is a book that would be worth having.

Why would you fill it with water to run on air?

                Looking at Bazyles link

The square block under the motion in the black painted section, if yours has one looks a promising link to connect a compressor to.

Otherwise use a blowdown point, which is probably simpler to use.

Thanks Bazyle. There is only a injector water feed and definitely no crank driven pump. I have filled and steamed filling via a clack valve. The link indeed shows a Thetford Town with a water pump on the manstand. The book is infact a two volume publication by Alan Marshall that appears to be unavailable world wide. I have seen several different pumps on various TT's and am leaning towards a eccentric on the inside of the flywheel which would not neccesitate much of a stripdown.

                  regards Jopo

Thanks dave I have used a blow down to fill. My TT has slightly different plumbing to that in your link.

                    cheers Jopo
