In response to a previous post, it was recommended that a Burr File could be used. It seems that this is a flat file with the sharp peaks ground down. Sounded like an interesting idea. Doing a web search threw up nothing except for millions of rotary burr files.

Am I right in assuming that one has to grind down a normal file, or maybe they doe exist commercially and I am using the wrong search term?

      Andrew.

I tried the same search last night, Andrew … with similarly useless results

The concept sounds very interesting but Google’s infinite wisdom appears to find things that ‘file with burrs’ in preference to things ‘used for the filing-down of burrs’

        .

Where is all this Artificial Intelligence when we need it ?

I couldn’t find any mention on the interwebs either.  I’ve no idea where the idea came from – it isn’t my original – but yes, you take a small flat file and grind the tops off its teeth, which is a useful way of dealing with an old and toothless file.  The burrs stick up into the remaining tooth depth and get filed off, and the toothless bit just slides over the unburred part.

Hi, I never heard of a burr file, but whenever I’ve needed to to take burrs off a drill taper shank, I’ve always used a well used smooth cut file, of an 8″ or maybe a 10″ one, never had any problems with getting rid of the burrs.

            Regards Nick.

              Hello Nick,

I have sorted out the burrs on my MT drills using the recommended Ese lap diamond tool The description of a burr file means that it would be even better than a diamond lap or a worn file. It can only remove the burr and cannot cut the MT taper.

Sounded an interesting technique and tool. Hence the interest. To do a professional job, one would need to use a surface grinder. Any other method that comes to my mind would not give equal depth of point removal. Hence the interest in a possible commercial source.

              Andrew.

Presumably these are the file equivalent to precision ground flatstones, but coarser

The normal video folks show is the Rob Renz one, which is referred to in the notes on the full Youtube version of this one.

I use one for deburring between scraper passes. It’s an Oregon* flat chainsaw file on which I skimmed the teeth flat on the surface grinder.

There is a risk that the file will distort slightly in this process, so it’s best to skim the teeth off both sides and then use the convex side if you are deburring a flat surface.

*Curiously, Oregon branded chainsaw files (at least from the ’70s-’80s) are/were made by Vallorbe.
