I have taken the plunge and added a surface grinder to my workshop.

Its a Burdett 70 Mk2 in fairly good condition.

Looking for a fellow member who may have or know of others with the same Surface grinder to help swap tech and maintenance info.

      Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks for your response – I have ordered the manual from Lathes.co.uk I’m sure it will have everything i need in it, but its always good to talk to fellow users.

If anyone knows of a member with a similar grinder it would be nice to get in contact with them.

I hope the manual you get is useful. The one I got for my Centec was not cheap.being largely old advertising material and whilst on good paper was not much help. Noel.

I hope so to – its a bit of a gamble when you can’t actually see what your buying from these sites –

I’ll be sending it back if its not a proper manual……

Happy to inform (those of whom are interested) that the Burdett is alive….. The strip and rebuild took way too long only a few small things to sort and It will be fully working again. I will post some pictures once its fully completed.

I now have the issue of making a spindle adapter to balance the wheels – How do I work out what the taper is so I can make the adapter – I can’t take the spindle out of the head.

I think what i’m asking is – how do I measure the taper on the head so I can cut a matching taper onto a shaft on my lathe ?

Do you have a wheel arbor with the machine?
If so, find a couple of bearing balls that are close to the maximum and minimum diameters. Put them in the arbor and measure their distance from the top with a depth micrometer ( or caliper, at need). correct for half the diameter of the balls to get centre distance, then the taper per side is tan⁻¹(((dia1-dia2)/2)/difference-in depth-between-centrelines)

You can use the same calculation, with a bit more fiddling and swearing, by using rings with a known bore on the spindle.

For a perfect fit, once you’ve turned up a female taper, use spotting blue to see how good the fit is and minutely adjust the angle to suit.

                    Good luck 🙂

PS:- the grinder looks as if it’s got the best bits of the B&S No2 and the Jones&Shipman 540 combined.

                      Hi Mark

Yes I have the wheel arbour – and will try as suggested. But balls of that size i have not (?).

But you have given me some ideas on how to work out the taper…

                      Thanks.

Its a beast of an machine and fully working will very much suit my amateur needs – I only brought it because it was there and more importantly …. it was cheap…. Ive spent less tat £200 on parts and paint – and that includes 20 litres of hydraulic oil –  the bed ways still show small signs of the original scrapping so would assume well within their tolerances’…. can’t wait to make some sparks.
