I have just finished machining a gunmetal casting for my engine and right on the final cut a 1/16" dia blowhole has been revealed. I am not keen to heat it so silver solder as a filler is not an option.

Any ideas? Bronze coloured JB weld would be ideal if it was available.

          Hello Rik

If you have some or can still make some filings of the material to mix as a filler into epoxy resin and by making a rather fluid mix, I think you should be able to plug a hole of that size by dabbling it in with a pin or similar and then helping it set with some gentle heat.

I am assuming this is a cosmetic repair and not required to stand up to pressure. I have made similar repairs in cast iron with fillers using filings from the casting.

          Regards

          Brian
