I’ve started to write up the build of my 1 1/2 times larger version of Anthny Mount’s Benson Engine over on HMEM if anyone is interested. I’ll do it there as its easier than posting pics to this forum but as a taster this is where I’m at for now

              Nice.

I couldn’t understand the ‘paint splatter’ on the base until I looked at the other thread!

I’ve just added the build up of the cylinder and valve chest over on HMEM, read it here

Just added how to turn a 6″ length of 1 1/2″ x 1/2″ steel into a pile of swarf and this over on HMEM

Well the cold has not kept me out of the workshop this weekend, having to file the piston rod guide to profile helped stave of hypothermia.

I’ve jumped ahead a bit but having got the engine to a stage where it could be test run I could not resist plugging in the compressor, here is a short video.

Its running on 10psi and with all this recent talk of getting piston rings a good fit I should point out that there are No gaskets, No gland packing and No piston ring material yet so should be able to get it down to a nice smooth tick over once its all set up properly and the governor is fitted.

A beautiful engine Jason, but your 'flyby" camerawork makes me feel seasick! (I'm just jealous, like Ady)

Not being a steam guy it took a second or two to work out that most of the noise was your compressor, but what it the rest of the sounds, sort of squeaky. What sort of pressure, and revs? Ian S C

60-70 rpm with the balls just lifting and the compressor reg wound down to 15psi.

If you look at the last post in the link to the build on HMEM I mention that "squeak" which I think is actually a whistling noise. I did not have it when I ran the engine without packing & gaskets and think it is a part blocked passage caused by the liqid gasket getting into the lower cylinder port which is making the noise on the downstroke as the air is exhausted. It does not make the noise when turned over by hand. Need to whip the cylinder off and clear the obstruction.

Great work Jason, wonderful workmanship. It runs very sweet. I too like the slightly larger models.
