BT email and other

Hello ,can you help me to try and get my computer to remember my passwords. My wife has touched some button on the computer and now all the saved passwords can't be seen. This has given me a lot of grief as my BT email will not automatically show the password and other sites that we use regularly.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks .

I keep a password book just for that very reason

I use Firefox as my browser. In the top right corner there are 3 horizontal bars, the application menu. Click on them and scroll down to Passwords. Click on that and a screen will open with all sites listed. Click on a site and you have the option of viewing the password for that site. I am assuming that there is a setting somewhere on the page to make your passwords automatic. I don't want to look for the setting because mine works and I don't want to break it! Please let me know if you get the passwords back, I might have to do the same one day.

You might find that the problem is specific to a browser and/or operating system.
In my case I use Opera on W10, and there are various display and password options within the browser security settings.

Be a bit careful with that one, as I'm not quite clear on the actual problem.
If Bob can get on e-mail OK, as it's set to auto log-on, it could cause a problem.
A re-set password won't be stored by the auto log-on in the browser, and he might get locked out if he inadvertently makes several attempts with the old password.
Maybe better to find the actual problem with the computer/browser setup first

Might depend on your browser. On Firefox for example open application menu, (3 bars top right corner)

—> settings; —> privacy & security; —> tick "autifill passwords"

You may also want to tick "ask to save passwords & logins"

Other browsers might be slightly different but can be found by a google search.

Why would you want your computer to remember your passwords. You are compromising your security.  In 50 years of computing I have never asked a computer to remember passwords.  At one site I had to remember 20 to 30 passwords all of which were unique and could not be repeated across the various computers, routers or switches.

I don't keep a password book as such, but if I change them just a bit more frequently, they will compete with my socks!! Seriously, I do change so frequently that a book wouldn't be much good, so I use a 'loose leaf' system by recycling old envelopes. When the back of one is full, it's sufficiently destroyed as to be useless in the wrong hands. It overcomes the many organisations that lose our data frequently and only reveal the fact many months later.In my opinion that gives the crooks time to buy and sell this info which when linked to what they already have, completes the jigsaw for them. My system has worked successfully for me for years. I generate all my passwords and dont opt for websites to remember me. They are often made up of ever longer random strings of characters. A record is kept of only 'live' ones as redundant ones never reused anywhere and no 2 sites share the same PW. My envelopes are like a card index, each one having a title, e.g., ME O/L FORUMS, ME SUPPLIERS, ME CLUBS, INTERNET TRADERS, this last being a miscellaneous group of businesses unconnected with model engineering. Includes supermarkets, Halfords, Premier inns, Bluebell rly., RHDR, organisers of traction engine rallies,etc. Classifying helps me to find what I want a bit faster.
