Brooks Stent Grinder Plans

Hi all,

I quite like the idea of adding a tool and cutter grinder to my equipment. However,even the Chinese clones of the Deckel SOE machines are out of my reach at the moment (+£700!). My thoughts were to attempt to build one and pictures of the Brooks Stent unit make it seem capable and not massively difficult to complete (famous last words).

However despite looking I have been unable to locate a set of plans…does anyone know of where they might be available or perhaps have a set they are willing to share?

Harold Halls design is a close second and one I am considering.

Hi Mark,

Brooks Stent ; try gadgetbuilder

Stent ; drawings and castings from Blackgates Eng.

Stent drawings and build notes in either ME or MEW.

Harold Halls site and book and his is stock metal sections, no castings, likely to be much cheaper.

I had wondered about using a small bench grinder as a grinding head for one? Yet another item on my ever growing "to do" list.

If you eventually think that a Stent is a bit beyond you, consider Worden. Hemingway supply the kits for these.

There are no castings to machine, the major components are sheet metal, and can be cleaned up with a file.

There will be other turning jobs to do, but they are fairly straightforward. Mine came with the table already graduated!

I have both a Stent (near complete*) and a Worden (most bits plus dedicated motor) surplus to requirements. Both are in need of cleaning /derusting and I have neither time nor inclination.

* probably complete but would need to gather all the bits, as it has been dismantled!

This is quite a simple one – you can see the concept and design your own to use a regular grinder or some other wheel. The body pivots on the front bar so the second bar is just a frame. Basically a simplified Quorn. More pics in my Colyer Casely folder. (sorry guys I may have spelled your names wrong)

Many thanks for all the replies everyone, it's much appreciated! A member on this forum got in touch and sent a copy of the MEW articles via PDF. It should make for an interesting project and a useful tool at the end of it all (fingers crossed).

Bill, thank you for the offer but I like the idea of trying to build one from scratch and possibly adding in a couple of modifications of my own.

I have a TG jig built from just 2 castings, one of my round to its. Got the sketches from Canada, Guy Lautard and given the castings by someone who had given up, probably because he had no drawings. So started from scratch a long time ago and it's nearly finished. Just got the tool holder block to bore, drill and tap. Not top of my list as other small projects more pressing, needed for use soon and to keep the write ups going in club newsletter.

The Lautard device is very simple, based upon only one pattern to make 2 castings which need to be machined slightly differently. He goes on to describe different attachments, with necessary drawings included, to sharpen reamers, radius grinding and several others.
