        No, don’t swap V1 and V2.

You need to work out which terminals are U1, U2, V1 and Z2. You either need to do this yourself or post clearer photos.

The OP asked about Z1 and Z2, not V1 and V2.

I am no expert at all, but it looks as if the mains powers one winding directly – via the blue and brown input wires – and another winding via the large capacitor and terminals Z1, Z2 – clearly visible in the first photo. Therefore changing over the wires on terminals Z1 and Z2 would reverse the start direction, would it not?

The main and starting windings both have a yellow tape marker on one end which might be another clue?

            No, don’t swap Z1 and Z2. I’d had a few beers.

Now I’m not six beers deep, I have a PDF with all the data on Brook motors. It states swap the red wires on Z1 and Z2. Leave the white wire where it is on Z2.

Well thank you everyone it seems like Z1 and Z2. It is such a beautiful motor I would hate to damage it. I bought it in 1962 for £20 from Sheffield and have used it on all sorts compressor circular saw ect, Its built like a tank and needs a very strong person to lift it they dont make them like it anymore

1 Swap the two top red wires

2 Plug it into a RCD

3 Pray to electric motor god

                  4 Switch on

                  Should be ok

With one that old anyway, you should keep it permanently on an RCD circuit

And give the bearings a few drops of oil while you can get at it

(I’m still running a couple of oldies from the 50s and 60s)

ONLY swap the 2 start windings Z1 and Z2 no others. An RCD will show leakage that may be caused by dampness if brought into a warm house from a cold shed. A motor of this size may well drop an RCD due to inrush or starting current though there is NO fault in a motor that has not been used for a while. In an ideal world an insulation test is the way to go. Let the motor warm up in a warm place before trying it. RCDs, MCBs No Volt releases and fuses WILL NOT protect a motor from cooking. For proper protection you need a motor starter unit with overload protection RATED for this motors Full Load Amps as shown on the data plate. If you are using a reversing switch then it should only be used to change the direction of rotation when the motor is STATIONARY, it should NOT be used to start or stop the motor. The motors starting current will be many times it’s run current though only of momentary duration.  Good Luck Noel.

PS Make sure the earth conection is sound. The wires in the picture look a bit light duty.
