does anyone home cast? i intend to make my own bronze but have heard that you cannot silver solder bronze with lead in it, if i were to but 99% pure tin and use copper from electric cables would that be pure enough to silver solder?

I silver solder LG2 all the time including boiler bushes.

That would work if you intend to produce your own alloy, of you could use phosphor bronze and just melt that. SAE 660 gunmetal is leaded and is the one to avoid, I have soft soldered it with great success, but not only does the lead make wetting the surface difficult, but the lead vapour given off is unhealthy when brazing or silver soldering. Google the types of bronze available first if you are going to buy it.

I silver solder SAE660 a lot when fabricating cylinders and don't get any problems.

I agree with Jason, SAE660 silver solders well.
