Bright Mild Steel Flat

Hi there

I'm here on behalf of my dad (an expert model maker!). He (and I!) have been looking for bright mild steel size 5/16 x 1/32 and having problems finding this size. Can anyone out there tell us of any suppliers of this BMS? We'd really appreciate any help you can give us. Thanks so much.

Lesley, you might have to get it shorn off a bit of sheet, and the thickness would either be metric, ie., .75 mm, or gauge thickness(can't remember the number nearest 1/32&quot. Ian S C

Not sure what your final use is but could you mill 1/16" off some 1/32×3/8 gauge plate which is a standard size. MSC/J&L have it.

Thats why I asked what the final use would be, if it just needs to look like steel or have certain properties then Gauge plate may do the job.

 

If you need a lot then you could also get it lazer or waterjet cut from the nearest metric sheet which is 0.7mm

Hi there

Thanks for all your replies. Let me try to explain what my dad is making. It's a scale model steam wagon. And he needs the bms for 4 elliptical lookalike springs. He's been looking all over the net to find bms of this size for this particular model. He is not able to mill the steel himself. He does have some 5/16 x 1/32, but can't remember where he got them from originally. He needs a few metres more for this model. He'd really appreciate any help you can give him. Thanks in appreciation.

What about spring steel its made for the job? several suppliers do 5/16 x 20 or 22swg which is about the right thickness.

If he is only making a show model and does not need the springiness then I would go with my suggestion of getting some strips waterjet cut from sheet, Have a word with Ian at Sciss, they are model engineer friendly

It may be worth looking at the steel "banding" that they use on heavy packages.
