Boxford tool post

I am looking for a quick change tool post and holders suitable for a Boxford AUD '5 inch' could someone give me an idea of what my options are regarding quality, price and size if that is an issue.

Buy extra toolholders at the same. Not all toolholders are comparable with whatever brand you buy.

I used arc eurotrades QCTP with no problems at all, I replaced it with a swiss multifix unit which costs way way more.

Depends on what you're doing as always. If you only use a few tools you obviously only need a few holders. But like most things in this hobby more is better so do take the other advice to buy plenty of holders.

At present I have ten holders permanently set up with everything from knurling tools to parting off to diamond turning tools, and I could still have a few more.

Depends how many tool holders you will need, if like me will need a lot and still need dozens more.

Multifix OSAO £220 odd plus £32.50 odd each holder

Alternative is the 250 series/200 about £125 and £20 per holder.

I bought mine from RDG. I now have 6 toolholders which gets me by but another couple would be useful.

I have a clone of the Aloris AXA on my South Bend 10K. In my opinion it was the best choice I could have made. I can buy extra holders for $12.

I thought the Multifix was a great toolpost but my wallet was not thick enough.

If purchasing the Aloris clone make sure it is the wedge type tool holder.

I have one of the Dixon clones sold by chronos its a bit rough around the edges but it does the job. Cant remember if the model was T1 or T51 but last time I looked the toolposts where about £100 and extra holders about £20 each.

I think the Dickson toolpost is of excellent quality. Its repeatability depends on the Vs in the holder being the exact distance apart. I hesitate to believe the various manufacturers of Dickson clones all get it right. Mixing holders from one vendor with a toolpost from another could be a problem.

By contrast the Aloris style locates off the face of the toolholder and the front face of the dovetail. Variations in dimensions will have no effect on repeatability as long as the holder fits the toolpost and the dovetail is not too big to clamp.

My 2 pence worth!!

Had a original Dixon badged Boxford on my CUD, couldn't fault it apart from the price.

Have now got a clone wedge type size B/250 on a Harrison M250, brilliant with the benefit of being able to make your own tool holders, because of the wedge you have more of a tolerance when using cloned tool holders. There is a fair bit of info about wedge v piston.

Check the sizes, I think a B will be a bit big, probably an A would be better.

I have a Dickson clone ' Bison' that I'd bought at auto/trade fair some years ago along with 4 holders; I now have eighteen holders, all fitted with different items, e.g. knurling tool, DTI, diamond tool, three types / sizes of parting tool et al. The various holders I have bought off eBay or from RDG at exhibitions, some have 'M' stamped on them most have not, but all fit the tool post ok. The ones from RDG bought at exhibitions have on average cost £15 ea. but I have also paid £20 ea. I still think 'could do with a couple more' but more of a 'nice to have thought than 'do I really need it'
