Some dimensions would also help …. Take the photo with a 12″ rule next to it?

My Juliet drawings show 12 1/4″ by 3 1/2″ OD so could be, backhead arrangement is about right once the stays go back in, 9 off 3/8″ flues and 2 off 3/4″ superheater flues ?

Thanks Nigel and Andy. Flues are right. Must be Juliet! Maybe I should try this one before my 5inch Minx? It needs an awkward repair and I will consult boiler inspector before attempting anything!

hi jon…are you building a minx? i started on that one a few months ago but its turned into a freelance build now! let me know if you need the juliet boiler fixing, I tig weld (and reluctantly solder) cu boilers and so can fix most things. They are a doddle to build and can be done in a single weekend! (not including fittings!)

Hullo Nigel, Postage to and from UK is pretty horrendous, but might be worthwhile! Tig welding on new boilers in Australia must be done by a certified welder and is strictly supervised. I don’t know what the UK equivalent would be. The Boiler I have looks as though it has never been fired, but someone has removed the two longitudinal stays, one of which I think was hollow. In the process they damaged the smokebox tubeplate rather badly and the tubeplate is copper welded to the barrel. My email is jone@ispdr.net.au if you would like to contact me or we can continue the discussion on the forum.

PS At the moment I am collecting parts for the Minx. So far a flanged boiler kit, machined cylinders wheel castings horn blocks and frames.

If the only problem are the two longitudinal stays that is not too bad. The original is copper and was ‘Silver’ (hard) soldered. As these stays were under tension I would make two ‘Top Hat’ bushes for each stay to push in from the outside. I would probably had them threaded internally to fit the stay. Clean up the boiler area well where they where they would be fitted and silver them in using the lowest melting point Silver’ (hard) soldered spelter. Do not forget to clean flux everything before fitting.
