Sadly some pics are beyond correction and retouching, but if you need them for an article to make sense and it's not possible to have them retaken you just have to do your best.

As club news uses pictures form newsletters they are often low-res to start with.

I took that picture with a Panasonic Lumix DMC FS-35 compact camera, which is capable of taking great shots. The one in question, Photo 2, is 5.9 Mb in size, well above the minimum required by M.E.'s editors. The fault is mine, in that there is a little camera shake, or loss of focus, I can't tell which. I used the picture as I thought the subject matter interesting, even if the technicalities did not quite meet your exacting standards. May I point out that the slick and glossy photos to which you allude are taken with equipment very much more sophisticated and costing tens of thousands of pounds, then 'photoshopped' endlessly to get the best possible results.
