Blow down valve

Hi, I’m currently consrtucting the BR Standard class 4 Tank Loco 2-6-4 (by Doug Hewson) and one of the things that is on the drawings is called a “everlasting blow down valve” which is situated low down on the front of fire box. I haven’t a clue what this is or how it works. Can anyone please explain this to me.

Drawings are in LBSCs Shop Shed and Road book. I think they are drawn for 3 1/2 gauge but easy to scale up or down.

The use of the word “everlasting” is curious. I wonder if it refers to some of the more modern full size boilers. Some of these were fitted with blow down valves that allowed a small quantity of water to continually flow out of the blow down valve. I believe the idea was to remove some of the build up of solids from the boiler, thereby increasing the time between boiler washouts

This did have some unforseen consequences with the condition of the track!

Nothing curious whatsoever in the use of the word ‘Everlasting’.  It refers to the manufacturing company name.  The valve itself is lever operated as required, so not a ‘continuous’ blowdown valve.

Tho’ as you will see from the company publicity they did anticipate the design far outlasting globe valves in use so lasting a very long time.
