      Good morning,

Yes, I know I can make them, but I'd rather be model making than tool making.

I want to use an M6 clamping stud in a M8 tee nut. I had considered loctiting a piece of M8 stud in the tee nut and re-taping it M6, but with an M8 core dia of 6.5mm, I thought it would be a bit too close.

So, can I buy M8 blank tee nuts?

My emboldening. Don’t you just need to turn down to 6mm (or slightly less?) and use a die?  I don't think you would buy M8 holes without thread.🙂

            HI ndiy,

By blank I meant with no hole, so I could drill and tap for an M6 stud.

They don’t need to be t shaped.

I would just get some hot rolled bar of appropriate width and lop a chunk off.

As they say, the simple solutions are sometimes the best. "Can't see the wood for the trees" and all that. I should get enough threads for M6.

                Thanks Dave.

If you only need some temporary holding, there was a thread here which dealt with using 'carriage' bolts – get some M6 Bolts, flatten the sides of the head so it fits the slot, and you're done.

Yes you can buy them, WDS tooling, expensive for what they are.

supply Tee nut blanks, though being an industrial supplier they are not "bargain basement" prices.

                            Beware though –

                            – make sure whichever route you choose that the studs or screws do not bear on the bottom of the slot. That is a recipe for breaking lumps out of the table.

Properly-made T-nuts have a trap-point to prevent the stud going right through the nut.

Beware of this approach, you have less metal in contact with slot underside and run the risk of damaging the slots. More inclined to tilt as well.

Why should using a piece of appropriate sized hot-rolled bar have less metal in contact with the underside of the slot be, or a bigger risk of damaging the slot? – nothing to stop using a piece of thick steel strip the same width as the slot, and as long as you like, which would spread any load.

If a piece narrower than the slot is used, then yes, it would increase the risk, but I don' think anyone is suggesting that.

That would be true if m6 thread nuts are used in m8 thread size slots, Bosun is trying to avoid that.

I bought a length on ebay from one of the well known suppliers and its ok, but I prefer to make my own which fit the tee slots better and bears on the outboard ends of the tee. Mine are 50% longer than the ready made ones.

I would have thought that by the time you have got the answer on here then ordered them wait for them to arrive you could have made some and still spend time model making and even possibly have the part finished which you wanted them for in the first place.

I have made many wooden models in the past and time making jigs and such is always well worth doing

If you can't spare the time to mill two rebates on a short length of mild steel and cut it into one inch lengths before drilling and tapping it doesn't bode well for model making Bo'sun.

It will take longer to respond to this thread than to make a six inch length so I would just get on with it – you'll surprise yourself just how quick you can make half a dozen

As mentioned earlier if making nuts for undersize studs I don't see much point in making them Tee section.

Take the photo below, in the middle are the Tee nuts I commonly use on my mill which has 12mm slots and nuts are tapped M10. on the right is an Emco nut for their M6 studs. On the left is the "bit of bar" that I used to make some nuts for use on the larger mill to accept M6, it's thicker than the Emco so less chance of pulling out being 1/4" thick rather than the Emco 5mm overall and a larger contact area than the emco's. Rectangular shape allows me to also use them on the rotary tables' 10mm wide (M8) slots too.
