Blade guards/covers?

Good morning,

Try as I might, I can’t find a source for the hinged plastic blade guards that come with many new hand saws.

Any suggestions please?

I’m currently waiting for a reply from Bahco.

I want these to be safe and easy to use for a volunteer group.  Hence, I don’t want to use homemade “push-on” guards from slit tube or hose pipe.

I get through a few bahco saws and the plastic covers that they have all come with are just to protect the teeth in the shop or if you want to cover them for storage/transport. They go in the bin

Sorry JB, I don’t have the current technology to send pictures (button phone & 35mm SLR).

They’re around 20mm tall x 5mm wide, hinged along the whole length on one side, with an “over-centre” type design that clamps the guard onto the blade (quite an interesting design).  Presumably they’re made of polypropylene for the hinge to survive frequent flexing.

The one I have is on a Bahco panel saw.  Many years ago, I bought several “cut to fit” lengths from Axminster Tools, but they don’t appear to stock it any more.

I tend to use plastic poster hangers for my own saws, but how about L shaped plastic or wood, lined with magnetic tape such as this.

Oh that is what I was thinking of the black protector, I thought you had seen some form of hinged guard rather like you see swing out the way on a chop saw. I think they are probably there to stop people cutting them selve swhen they are all hanging up in the DIY Sheds.

Still go in the bin but as Peak says the poster hangers are likely to be the nearest off the shelf item and very similar to how other saws and blades come when new

Sometimes those slide-on plastic strips are more of a hazard than a help, they break easily, and it is all too easy to cut yourself when trying to slide them on, if they are the tight fitting type.

How about a wooden lath with a groove along the length, and some knicker elastic or laggy bands to keep it in place?

Jason, I’m surprised you’re binning what seems to work well as a long lasting blade guard.  Try keeping them next time.

For smaller saws (and cabinet scrapers) I use stationery spine bars/slide binders, but they are home-made and push-on.

Thanks Charles, I thought of those, but they all seem to be A4 size.

The Poster Hangers however, suggested by peak4 are similar and longer, so may be a good alternative to what I’m looking for.

My saws get used too much to be wasting time taking off and refitting covers every few mins.

Anybody using saws should expect to get a few nips from them, it,s the only to learn !

I do use a bit of rectangular PVC trunking that fits, as a blade guard for my 4 foot bow saw. That’s because it doesn’t take prisoners in any way.

The hacksaws, cross cut saw and tenon saws don’t tend to leave bits of arm or finger on the floor from simply brushing up against them 😀

I have used metal edge trim to protect saw blades in transit.

Just serch for metal edge trim on the web.
