You mentioned Santander. I believe they recommend, but do not require, users to install security software (browser extension) called Trusteer Rapport.

Opinions vary as to the value of this.

Since there isn’t a Linux version, I don’t use it. I have some memory from when I had a Windows computer that it was a pain, though I can’t remember why.

Hi, my bank recommended that Trusteer Rapport many years ago, but said to ditch it a couple years or so ago, as it wasn’t up to their security standard anymore.

        Regards Nick.

All this has confirmed my view that I have been right to resist all attempts to have on line banking.

Didn’t stop a scam call from “Your Bank Security Services”, which didn’t get anywhere.

But it has made me somewhat paranoid.

The good news is that a deep scan has shown no malware presence.

You can check if your email address is in the open by checking Have I Been PWNED.

Due to numerous software breaches there are a huge number of mail addresses that are known to be on black market lists.

The threat of extortion is often accompanied by the first few characters of a password. Very often the password is picked up from insecure non-HTTPS forums or site registrations  and if you haven’t changed your password since, could be relevant. It may be an older disused password that whilst ineffective causes the victim concern.

Older forum software can be a ready source of usernames, passwords and personal details.
