Does anybody know the cost of the casting kit for the stent T&C grinder from blackgates.

I did email them during the week, no reply, they do have a price list for the catalogue, are they making the customer buy a catalogue to find out the prices?

I want to believe this isn't the case, but nothing surprises me these days.

In my downloaded catalogue from 2019, the drawings are £20 and set of 12 castings £468.

I dare say the prices have increased since.

Here you go, 2019 still current on the web site. See P95 (P99 of the pdf)

Thanks, it's a shame they don't update their website, from the looks of their catalogue they have some interesting projects, but the effort put in to showing their customers what they're actually selling is pretty poor.

Small businesses have a lot to deal with at them moment – and not everyone has the knowledge or time to construct and maintain the kind of website people (spoiled by Amazon & eBay) have come to expect. It can also be quite expensive to pay someone else to do it for you – not just setting up an online shop but the ongoing maintenance fees.

I've got the Blackgates catalogue downloaded as a PDF and it's index gets you either on the required page (or very near to it) and there are many specialist ME items packed into it's 150 odd pages that I've found very useful over the years.

Above all else, they are very helpful if you email or call them (even for a few inexpensive items) and I value that above all else quite frankly. Be grateful that we still have a few small firms catering to our needs and use them. One day they may be gone and you will miss them.

                    Regards,

                    IanT

With the price of metals having gone up considerably since 2019 prices quoted are unlikely to be valid, and at the figures mentioned It might be worth thinking of a clarkson T&C grinder if it would suit your purpose.Good Luck Noel.

Small traders tend to hold prices on existing stock, reviewing costs when they restock – so the Stent castings may not be effected just yet.

A Clarkson needs a good deal more space than a Stent and is much heavier. The Stent (a scaled down Clarkson) will do most of what a Quorn is capable of (and all of what most folk need). A set of Quorn castings (& drawings) is currently just under £700. .

If you fancy a Stent – why not give Blackgates a call and ask them the current price of their Stent castings?

                        Regards,

                        IanT

Hi Ian, I emailed them and didn't get a response, which was the original point of this thread, I don't have time to call people during the day, other small business like eccentric engineering and hemmingway kits have no problem uploading a few photos, a small investment might even boost their business, people generally like looking at what they're spending their money on, from what I see they sell to people who already know what they want.

with a better website people might browse and buy things they didn't know they wanted.

I understand eccentric is a one man operation, you don't need to be Jeff Bezos to upload a few photos of what your selling, anyhow I'd rate Amazon pretty poor when it comes to photos of what they're selling, they often don't even have the right picture of what the title is, plenty of small businesses doing a better job.

But if they were gone, I'm not sure I'd miss them, as I don't know what I'm missing.

When I lived in Leeds I used Blackgates for years, good stock and knowledgeable. Bought my first lathe from them.

I only used to visit to buy as you are not able to order via the website, emails and calls were not always answered.

Now I am in Northumberland I use suppliers that have a website that allows me to see what I want and can order online.
It’s a pity as Blackgates are a good firm but have not moved with the times, I wish they would as I would use them again.

If you can't get the kit for a Stent, how about making a Worden?

Easily machined and assembled, and a range of accessories to extend what tools can be sharpened .

Like many others, such as Giles Parkes, rather than make a sleeve for each and very drill size, I made an ER 20 collet holder, so that any Drill, End Mill, or Slotting Drill up to 13 mm can be gripped for grinding, as well as lathe tools.

The fixture for Slitting Saws needed modification to be a useable item, but now works well.

With a Diamond wheel, carbide tools can be ground. This enabled me to sharpen an inserted tooth shell mill.

In fact it cuts better than when it was new!
