        Greetings all,

I need to make a bunch of die holders as per the Geo.H. Thomas tailstock design, but trying to decide if I should make a turret type carriage stop.

Stupid me I sold the first set I made in the '70s and regret it as usual.

My first set was made on my V10P that had a simple carriage stop as well as a clutch on the carriage feed shaft, both making the machining pretty easy.

Should mention that the clutch was only used as an emergency 'stop going into the chuck' facility.

I have found some nifty turret designs, both bed & carriage mounted, but can't decide which would be best/most convenient though. No doubt they could be made interchangable quite easily.

Also thinking of a cross-slide stop as well for this exercise.

No DRO fitted yet, but may go for a Newall system.

        Advise please.

        Cheers,

Geoff – Snow flurries in South Norfolk.

My commercially made 6 position turret bedstop is high on the "don't wanna do without it list". Its been on 6 lathes in my hands and had been modified before I got it so gawd knows how many its actually been on. Never actually fitted anything absolutely properly but that hardly affected how well it worked. Stops are plain 1/4 inch diameter rods, a bit on the small side. The back of envelope file has half done drawings for a swanky version with micrometer adjusters and switch for an electric single tooth dog clutch sized to fit the S&B 1024 perfectly. The roundtuits ran out shortly after grabbing the micrometer heads off E-Bay, £25 for 10 new old stock can't be bad. Setting plain rods isn't too bad as I have a carriage travel dial, a DRO would be as good. Got a "won't wring anymore" set of gauge blocks for free which are sometimes handy during setting.

The official Smart & Brown micrometer adjuster single rod bed stop came with the lathe and also gets a fair bit of use. Fitting the spindle assembly from an old micrometer to a simple clamp on bed stop is the fast way to make one.

In these chips with everything days I've often thought that an electronic version with a motor driven threaded rod would be a good way to go. Theoretically as many setting as you like at the press of a button. Hard wire electronics for up to 10 or so wouldn't be that hard. Maybe a Rasberry Pi Ior other cheapy micro-controller doobie. believe some DRO sets have data outputs. All except the very basic ones can be set up with a goodly number of zero setting points offset relative to some reference. So mayhap that's a way to go. If DRO data can be read effectively I guess you could skip the stops and simply use an electric actuator on a single tooth dog clutch in the feed drive.

What I really want is a multi stop on the cross slide.

First modify both shear pins to be brass pins drilled to weaken for the time you decide it is ok to power feed with stop still in place. Then fit a limit switch for when the stop isn't in place. The connector block has a little loop in one place in the safety switch daisy chain to use for this neatly.

To be really clever you could make an impact point on the saddle that incorporates an off switch. But this off switch only comes into play when the feed lever is not in neutral allowing the micrometer or turret stop to be used normally with manual feed and automaticaly providing protection when in power feed.

Trouble with a turret stop is whether you can be bothered to set them. Does one of your designs have interchangeable turrets? I keep designing them in my head but actually just have single micrometer one.

I have a single stop, witha bit of threaded rod. If I use it I invariably move the saddle to where I want to stop, then clamp the stop hard up against it. I never even move the rod!

But making some gears yesterday, counting the handle winding back and forth, I think a couple of stops on the milling machine are overdue!

Thanks for reply Clive. Food for thought.

                Bazyle,

The pin mods are on my To-Do list plus I will add the others as well.

Didn't cross my mind about a QC style stop. Nothing has come up in my searches.

The basic designs appear to be pretty robust, so the QC feature shouldn't be to difficult to incorporate, but it all depends on how complicated one wants it to be.

I need to do a design incorporating what I've seen anyway, so may as well see if I can add this feature, even if not needed straight away.

I do see a turret type for the cross-slide being a usefull addition as well.

                Neil,

Don't see why the stop/s cannot be interchangeable between machines, but may need some thought on mounting. Could use them on my mills.

This is going to be an interesting exercise.

Don't hold your collective breaths though, as getting the shaper running is a priority.

                Geoff – Bolognese time.
