Weird to have that 50's Diner area built with new stuff. I've eaten at several Diners in the midwest that had exactly that decor style and appeared to be original -if it's not broke don't fix it….

I'll second that.

He speaks of a traditional 9000 sq ft home set in 110 acres. The average UK home is 656 sq ft. Bourgeois extravagance at it's best (worse) I could think of better uses for the copious wealth.

I don't want to start a heated discussion, especially one tangent to the thread topic…But I'm an American and even I agree that is extravagance. (Many Americans aren't taxed enough. Nobody is allowed to say it, though.)

That seems more like a museum than a mancave. I would want: metal shop, wood shop, welding shop, foundry, forge, garage for working on cars, electronics hobby area, and a small place to relax. And maybe another garage to build a boat in.

That's what my Modern History U3A lecturer said recently – but he thinks it may no longer be the case.

I may have to change my mind. I think what's shown in the video above is indeed a mancave and what I described is a workshop. I've never had a mancave, so I dunno. If guy friends come over we end up in the garage.

The very idea of a mancave is an alien concept to me if what is meant by it is somewhere you're required, by the female partner in your life, to confine your workshop-related stuff and activities. In our house, an angle grinder on the dining table for a few days, a socket set on the microwave, or even a lawnmower in the hall scarcely raise an eyebrow.

As long as you keep the living areas clean, reasonably tidy, and still useable for other everyday purposes, I do not see what there is to object to. Fortunately, my other half agrees.

Shortly after we got married, there were some questions raised when I wheeled my Norton Atlas into the kitchen and parked it for winter storage. But it all went quiet when I threw a sheet over the bike "to keep the dirt of the kitchen off my clean bike".

These days I have two sheds and the house is devoid of anything mechanical.

No, though I suppose few of them grew up sharing their bedroom with chickens and have degrees in philosophy.

My missus is quite tolerant, considering we started our married life 50+ years ago with a motorbike engine in bits, in biscuit tins full of paraffin down the hall in the flat (the rent collector turned white as snow). But now the workshop (built as an integral garage) is just off the front hall and contains her pottery kiln as well. Tools may sometimes sit on the kitchen table for a day or two, but territorial disputes are uncommon.
