Scaling off the drawing gives the missing vertical separation as 7/8 in. (22mm), though I am guessing that this distance is not critical given the geometry and the suggestion that the Beam Support Arms are fitted to the job.
Slighty taller Beam Support Brackets might be more aesthetically pleasing.
The Steam Chest is drawn out as part of the Cylinder drawing (top of page 9), and needs to be viewed in conjunction with the text ‘Trial Assembly’ on page 15 for exhaust arrangements.
Basically the steam chest is two holes drilled at 90 degrees to each other.
I assume that the author kept things simple and sometimes rather vague as he anticipated a variety of sizes of material being availalble and used by builders and so he didn’t want to be too prescriptive.
I realise that my response sounds rather wooly, but hopefully it will help, I only stepped in as I am vaguely interested in this model myself and you haven’t yet ellicited any responses. The original articles have a few more photographs, but the text and drawings seem exactly the same – including the absence of ‘the missing dimension’.
