Bernard Towers’ Lantern Chuck

I’ve had several an avalanche of queries asking for the drawings of this neat design.

Bernard is very pleased people like his lantern chuck. He is drawing up the design with pencil and paper, and it should appear in MEW 302.

I have to say that the Lantern Chuck article is the very essence of what a small project for MEW should be.

It's reasonably quick and cheap to make.

It's something that, even if you were aware of, you probably will not have got around to making yet (like me).

It's a genuinely usefull piece of kit that once you have you keep using.

It's, as far as I am aware, not something you can buy.

I do make quite a lot of workshop tools and equipment but usually on the more elaborate side such as dividing heads etc. The smaller stuff tends to get overlooked especially when there are workarounds and lash ups which just delays making the proper piece of kit. I have been sometimes going to make a lantern chuck for about 20 years and the article has given me a sufficient nudge to get on with it.

The RH end of the black bar above has a back issues button which takes you to the back issue supplier. I think they supply on a “when they are gone they are gone” basis. Failing to find what you want there you can find most copies on eBay which will usually be used copies.

You can also buy digital back issues from Pocketmags as well as the current issue, allows printing off of two pages at a time.

drawing in issue 303 has a mistake . the dimension for screw cutting the internal thread on the lantern screw should read 0.710 screwcut 32TPI. to be a close fit on thread on body. Hope neil sees this as it needs to be noted in the mag.

This is my version of Bernard's Lantern Chuck. I did have a problem with some of the dimensions on the drawing in MEW 302 as they were a mixture of imperial and metric and there was a spurious 1.2 (inches ? ) which was obviously wrong. I think it would have been better to have the drawing in either imperial or metric or as 2 separate drawings. The other thing I found was that with my fat fingers it was a little difficult to get a screw-holder and screw into position ready for shortening.
I was quite pleased to get the 2 parts screwing together nicely as I used a carbon steel tool that I inherited with the lathe from my father and must be over 60 years old for the external thread and a home-made silver steel internal threading tool. At least on my Myford S7 the 8tpi leadscrew makes it easy to cut a 32tpi thread.

sorry Richard but the 1.2 dimension does not appear on my original drawing. the mix of dims are there to enable people to imagine the sizes as some people think in imperial and some in metric. It looks like you have made a good job of it and I hope it gives you pleasure using it. Try putting your screws in with tweezers.
