On Tuesday evening, the Manchester Group of the BHI was treated to a demonstration of this tool in use.

      Two things astonished me:

      1. In use, the device is heated up [on its own little hotplate] to 130°C, and yet the dial gauge survives.
      2. The actual adjustment of the jewel is done by hand: The dial is simply an indicator.

We watched in awe [video microscope, projected], as the demonstrator repositioned the pallet jewel by about 0.02mm.

I dont see any problem for the dial indicator as probably only a very small part of the whole tool is heated.

Its looks a beautifully made tool (typically Swiss), but you have to admire watchmakers of the past who achieved the same sort of accuracy with purely hand tools mostly made with their own hands.

Since I sent this reply I looked at the instruction leaflet so I see the whole thing is placed on a heated table. Its not clear from the instructions but I assume that not everything gets hot, it certainly would not be fun turning the adjustment knob if that was at 130C!

            No, Ian

The whole unit is put on the hotplate, and I can assure you that it all gets very hot.

            I will post some pictures.

            Edit

The various black bits are some decent insulating material; so, yes you can pick it up [by the ends] and operate the clamp and the screw.

Does the watchmaker wear Nomex gloves then?
