Hi, I live in a cave in Andalucía and, having seen something similar in a friend's cave home, I want to build some little dioramas in holes I will chip out of the rock. First I intend to make An Octopus's Garden to amuse the grandchildren. I have figured out how to use a fridge door type of switch to turn a light on when the door is opened but I'm wondering how I could also use that to trigger music – a miniature mp3 player would be ideal but don't know if such a thing exists. Any ideas gratefully accepted.

          Hello Pop,

The simplest solution would be to search for a 'greeting card recorder' – these are very simple units meant to fit in things like birthday cards that are switch operated and you can record a short message or piece of music on.

P.S. You may be interested that the city of Nottingham (about 30 miles from where I am) has thousands of man-made caves, some of which are still used as parts of houses and pubs, for example.

Thanks, I shall look into that.

I've never visited them, only been to Nottingham twice though I used to live in the Midlands, but I've had friends from the city who have told me of them. Here on the Altiplano de Granada there are thousands of cave homes, some going back centuries, as well as cave hotels and restaurants.

            Many thanks for your help.

More to the point have you hewn out a workshop with solid rock lathe bench?

Ha ha, smiley, no. But for the first time in my life I've got room to have a workbench and tools without having to clear the dining table for meals, and have made a bird table with house, and a flower press for my wife. I've had a little practice and made a small shelf with a hammer and chisel without any rock falls and am now progressing to a small pickaxe to make a diorama, and also some bookshelves.
