or would I better off making two new valve covers which would hold a union, I'm not sure it would work doing that as the foot plate maybe in the way and would mess the look of the engine up, but id like to try and make it as normal as possible and of course be very safe.

I do wonder if I was to draw up a small union that would fit and send away the valve covers, someone maybe able to make them and even silver solder them into the covers to make a nice safe seal..id rather have them done correctly

          Hi all

So no progress this week to report, waiting on some new main frames before I can build the train back up, hoped to have worked out the steam pipes ready for the boiler but still having trouble working around the space I have and the fittings.

In two minds what to do about all that yet, Ithink I will have a light bulb moment one day and it will all work out.

So in the mean time I will get everything back up together, build the motion works and see what the future holds, having a really annoying health issue at the moment putting me off life but the train keeps my mind occupied.

Hope to have some more pictures for anyone who is interested soon, did find another loco of the same type on eBay but it too didn't have its boiler or I'd of snapped it up, it's cynliders looked neater than mine but I still couldn't warrant the spend as I didn't need the other parts.

But shows it's worth keeping an eye out and anything could turn up in the coming months.

          Good health to everyone.

                      Hi All

I hope everyone are well, so I've attempted to do some bits on the train but with health issue it's been difficult to be interested, So I received some new main frames today as the originals were just not great, this has now stopped me in my tracks and to be honest I thinks it's time to give up and let someone else try.

Julian was correct that this train would be a can of worms, after fitting the wheels to the new main frame the main connecting rods fit but won't turn, this is obviously why the previous owner had made the frame to compensate.

Laying them over the drawing, two of the holes don't line up and the overall length is wrong by atleast 2mm, I haven't measured exact yet as I feel so fed up, I think I should of listened to Julian and just got rid.

I haven't the funds or will power to carry on now but I'd like to say thank you for everyone who helped me to this stage.

                      Take care everyone

                        Hi Derek,

You have done a very good job so far. Dont give up!

It is often the case that home made frames (and other bits) as per your originals will have discrepancies, also perhaps your new frames. I once rebuilt two 3.5"g locos where the coupled axles were not parallel and the coupling rod bearings opened out massively with a rat tailed file to get the rods to turn!

                        Cheers,

                        Julian

                          Hi Julian

Thanks for your response, I assumed having to have a good fit on the rod bearings I would need a good tight fit.

The rods are pretty undersized so I'd need egg shapped holes I reckon even to get them to spin.

                              Hi All

So two small bits of good news, hospital appointment finally here and I've found out I don't need to replace all the linkage only the rear half. As the front section turns fine when fitted.

So the train is not done and dusted yet, I hate to give up and I'm not going too, sometimes I just feel rubbish and puts me off, I will upload some pictures soon as I'm presently listing Gramophone needle tins on eBay for my dad who collects them.

                              Regards Del

I've just picked up on this thread again and hope your health is improving.

The Loco is looking good, you must be very pleased with all you have achieved, just been looking at some of the early photos again, what a difference!

                                      Hi V8

Yeah I will live, many thanks.. Yes I'm pleased with what I've done its be up and down and it's been a mixed bag of issues.

To be honest other than the tender and the wheels everything is new, I had some main frames made for me which I've used but we're not exact to drawing, so that was another blip, but I should be able to cope with that.

I have the steam and exhaust pipe issues still but I've put that at the back for a while, I wanted to fix in a brass block instead of pipe and screw this to the frame to compensate for the misaligned holes on my cynliders but two holes on the frames had to be slotted because of the fault by the laser cutter, this makes impossible to do a seal now.

A picture may explain this better in due course, but I still feel confident there's a solution, in the mean time I'm plodding on with the rest of the train, because my new frame was pretty much accurate this threw up another issue with the connection rods not fitting.

It's just one other issue to solve but I have castings to make new ones when the time comes, I actually have two new cylinder castings which I may get machined so the exhaust holes would line up but I'm putting that on hold until I can save up.

I will add some more pictures of the train over the next few weeks, considering I've never done metal work or built a train I'm glad I've rescued the model but sad that I've had to replace pretty much everything, feels abit like I've lost the original but there wasn't much choice.

                                      Kind regards Del

                                            Good evening All

So health wise it's still crap, but to take my mind of that I've done some more work on the monster that I call the flying Scotsman, the train I'm dragging into reality.

Constant battles and pulling hair out but I'm still plodding on, and today I feel a step forward. anyone who has read some of my previous posts will be aware of the mis-aligned cylinder exhaust holes, well in the below picture you will see my solution which I hope to work, I will put some steam sealant between all joints, the hole on the top will have a pipe up into the smoke box, now all this extra work was all because of these two holes and its taken me a long time to sort this, so if you see a major reason it won't work, please be gentle or I may cry 😥

                                              Hi Derek,

The block is a sensible way to deal with the misaligned cyl holes. What holds it in place? is there at least a screw or two to the crossmember below? or could the exhaust nozzle be made to hold it in place? Some good high temp sealant will seal the joints, but you probably need a fastening system of some sort.

Sorry about the health issues, take care of yourself. Other items in the pic look great! You are making progress. Just one step at a time… that's how all steam models are built, anyway! JD

                                                Hi JD

To answer your question, behind the cylinders I've done countersunk screws holding the block tight to the inside of the frames, on the cylinders are short pipes which slip inside the brass block.

All of this hassle has been because of the previous owners drilling skills, but seeing as this may of been done 50 years ago, I'm not going to disrespect them. It's been a challenge but actually I think this looks better than a copper pipe anyway.

I have some laser cut parts to work on yo get the motion works built next, I shall start to add more to this thread now that ive made some progress.

                                                Kind regards Del
