Is anyone aware of a supplier in the UK of Barrel Laps, either ACRO or American Lap ?

I contacted the manufacturer of Acrolaps back in 2010 and they had no UK distributors back then.

I ended up buying from the states and getting shipped.

          I bought from here

          **LINK**

I got a 10% online discount, and shipping to the UK was $14.95 for my order

There was a minimum order quantity, but it was only in the region of 20USD i think.

I bought 1×15/32 lap with 3 extra barrels and 1×1/2 lap with 3 extra barrels and the total, including delvery came to $41

I didnt get stung for any import duty or tax on this one and the package came in around 1 week.

I believe I submitted the order with no shipping, they then calculated shipping, sent me invoice and charged the card I gave during the order. I dealt with Kristen, (Kristenmoldtechtc@mdt-usa.net) who was very helpful.

Hope this helps, if you dont find anyone in the UK stocking these.

Is this item for honeing gun barrels, Looked at the Utube and the guy demonstrating had a revolver stuck it his pants. pity he did not pull the trigger. What do you intend to do with this tool…
If it is about firearms I for one and know that many others on this forum will not be happy.

With my Mods hat on can I ask that this thread be kept on topic and not drift off into a firearms debate.

I was going to suggest making one but at the prices Graham has given they are cheap enough to buy.

They're needed for a couple of model aircraft diesel engines I've got on the go, refurbing/replacing liners and pistons. Didn't know gun barrels were honed, we live and learn.

                Graham.

Thanks for the lead, just been on the web site and they've got what I need, will ring and place an order later as they say they do International orders.

In that case they are quite easy to make as you don't need the length, this is the one I used on my firefly

                    Springbok,

I believe they are called Barrel laps, because they are shaped like barrels. They have nothing to do with guns.

The acrolaps are a really nice design, and make finishing of a cylinder liner for diesels a pinch.

You can see from the below picture, the barrel lap is for through holes and expands in the centre, forming a barrel shape as the tapered pin is screwed in. The blind hole lap, expands at one end when the tapered screw is fed in.

There are a couple for sale on ebay in the states. Might be a cheaper way to get one, assuming you need 1/8" or 5/32" that is!

Never made the connection between guns and Barrel Lap, as Graham Wharton indicates it's the shape they take up when you adjust them that gives the name. Need 9/16" and 5/8" laps. Did the ebay search but couldn't find those sizes, there was guy selling a comprehensive set for $80 which I thought could be handy but the cost of shipping was $62 and Her Maj's officers were bound to put their cut on as they weighed over 4lbs so that would have made it expensive. Didn't want to go the 'make them yourself' route, there's plenty of info on doing it on the web, as I always seem to get nudged off on a tangent, make something to make something to repair something……. you get the idea.

                        Thanks guys

Jason, that looks neat. Is there a taper on both the shaft and the inside of the expanding part so you get even expansion across the length of the lap?

That was the only thing that put me off making my own, i.e the need to machine tapers. (I don't know why, but machining tapers is something that I shy away from (probably due to me not doing them so often))

Yes both have a mating taper. Its not an issue when making both parts as they don't need to conform to anything else unlike say a MT tooling. Just machine both parts without altering the top slide setting and you won't go far wrong.

If you look at Ramons articles or web builds on his diesel engines there is a good explanation of how he made them and the use of lapping powders.

Just placed an order with Mold in the US, $23 to ship forecast 6/10 days delivery, no problems with them, international no trouble.

What lapping medium did you use to do the Firefly liner, have been told that Solvol Autosol chrome cleaner will do the job but I'm a bit unsure, was actually looking at the finest valve grinding paste but told that is to aggressive.

Yes the valve grinding past is like rocks compared to lapping powders.

Have a look at my Firefly thread botton of this page and this thread by Ramon.

Down to 600g is available from woodworking tool suppliers in small amounts, for the 1000g look at jewelry hobbies as its used to tumble stones in to get them smooth and rounded.

Thanks Graham (#2) for that link to moldshoptools. In umpteen years of buying tools I have never seen that such laps are commercially available.

As I just need some sizes, I made an order and they are already under way!

I made laps myself before, but at these prices – life is too short!

                                    Greetings, Hansrudolf
