              Thanks Robbo,
              I did not notice the title line.

              Sorry Ian,
              I will have to make a point of looking at the top of a post when I select it in future. Also sorry I can't help with that type of bandsaw.

              Les.

                  I have this type of bandsaw. Where the blade goes thru the table there is a plastic insert that the blade travels thru.

                  Is this a safety device?

                  Although they're only a few £££'s mine is getting pretty beat up & I was thinking of machining up a replacement in ally?

                    I have used a DeWalt bandsaw, can't remember the model. The top wheel used to seize up regularly due to an accumulation of sawdust. It was simply a matter of removing the nut in the centre of the wheel and then it would pull off and as a temporary measure the bearings could be flushed out with WD40 or similar. The best solution was replacement of the bearings with good quality properly sealed bearings.

                      My memory is playing tricks, it was ten years ago. I believe that I used to remove the nut at the back to take the wheel off the machine and then the spindle could be driven out after the front nut had been removed.

                        Mick,

                        Most bandsaws have a removable insert in the middle of the table, the blade passes through a central slot in it when the table is horizontal. When the table is tilted to its maximum, the insert may have to be removed to allow clearance for the blade. Often it has to be removed to gain access to the lower blade guides under the table.

                        The "safety" feature of it is that it is of "soft" material which will not cause a problem should the blade come into contact with it.

                          Re. Bandsaw repair DW 3501;

                          Hi guys, thank you all for your responses. It was a real pain to get apart due to top tension screw seizing, and boy was it seized. I hacksawed off the central shaft, which was only 6mm thick. Made a complete new assembly using lathe (what a machine!!), mill, drill. Only part I need to buy was a flat bearing at 8mm instead of 6mm. Of course no-one had a bearing of this type so had to buy a 10mm and sleeve it. The 6mm shaft was stripped over a distance of 10mm.

                          No wonder I had to turn it about a hundred times before I realized it must be stripped. Duh!

                          Chuffed to have the saw back in operation in less than 24 hours.
