well I’ve removed the spindle and managed to take out the back gear cluster.

wasnt too bad of a job to do, now just have to buy a new one.

at least they do still sell them at myford, but blimey, £91 for a new cog.

well I like the machine to run as good as it can, I was tempted to leave it, especially at that price, as I don’t use the back gear that often, but like I said if anything’s wrong with it, I do like to get it fixed.

      thanks for the help

            Used one here for £85

..I've bought from this seller ('Heritage-lathes' ) before, no problems.

Home&workshop have a new one on Ebay for £150.. laugh

You did remember to save the shims from the bearing caps so that you can stick them back in the same place they came out of when you re-assemble?

              Hi,

yeah , i placed each shim exactly where they came from so they can go back just as they came off.

hopefully everything will go back together properly 😉

I wonder if anyone has bought two gears of the correct specs and joined them together to make a cluster?

When you get the lathe repaired, you may be able to get hold of one of the 3D printed gear locking devices to fit on the large gear nearest the front of the spindle. Using one of these spreads the force of unscrewing the chuck over many teeth. No more broken teeth. The lathe model and number of teeth on that gear would be required before ordering one.

I’m sure someone would offer you a fiver for that ‘scrap’ gear cluster.😊
