The tables above have been most usefull

Opened up a new box of Sherwood M5btaps, today, to find that they don't want to go into a 4.2 mm hole. Why? 5.25 mm diameter although marked 5 x 0.8! So look like being incorrectly marked 1BA!

      Howard

Hi Howard, maybe they are 5mm taps for thread repair coils.

      Regards Nick.

Hi MC, the chart is a page from Tubal Cain's Model Engineer's Handbook.

        Regards Nick.

May I ask the source of this data please?

It would be useful to have a laminated copy in my shed-workshop but I don't know how to print just the table.

          Very many thanks in anticipation

Yes of course … it is the page which Nigel Graham 2 misquoted

… Please see Nigel’s post on page 2 of this thread … which you have already questioned, and upon which I have already remarked.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I did NOT appreciate that the table came from Tubal Cain's book – I'll have to buy a copy.

With best wishes and thanks again.

                Michael –

Oh there! Still took me a couple of readings to spot it.

                Thank youl!

~'Twas all those 4s preceding it. I was always better at Reading & 'Riting than 'Rithmetic but combining them, well…..

Sorry, I did not specifically state that blush

I did, however, include the page number in the image … largely for Nigel’s benefit.

Don't think that I have any BA thread gauges, (Typical! Whit, Unified and Metric but no BA&nbsp but will tap a nut 1 BA and try the Taps. They certainly don't want to go into a M5 nut!

1 BA is 0.9 mm pitch while M5 Coarse is 0.8, so difference in both diameter and pitch!

An order for new Taps is imminent. Hand, Spiral Point, or Spiral Flute? is now the decision

As the former publisher for the University of London, I can safely write that proofreading one's own text is more than difficult.

One sees what one intended to write rather than what's on the paper

Did you try comparing the Tap with an existing 1BA screw?

I recently bought a BA thread gauge on E.Bay for less than a fiver – I guess most of that was postage!

Perhaps you should think about whether you want to include Serial Taps with Hand, Spiral Point and Spiral Flute?

I bought a set of M5 (or M6 – sorry forgot) serial taps in a "sale – reduced" and one of the set crumbled the first time that I used it! The supplier didn't want to know!

A final bit on nut spinners as per original post

Nut spinners are used in the aircraft industry on terminal blocks on wiring looms

This is the vertical stud type with insulated seperators

So on a connection strip, loom terminals placed over stud, nyloc nut fitted and tightened with a nut spinner, until the nut spinner CLICKS

This is the preset torque arrangement in the handle to prevent over tightening.and putting stress into the stud.

                                Hope that makes sense.

                                bill

                                That makes perfect sense.

Your spinner sounds a bit like a Torque Wrench

The Nut Spinners that I bought do NOT click in that way.

I still have an eye open for a 4BA or 1/4" Nut Spinner!

With best wishes and thanks again.
