auto retract threader copying Mrs Woopees
I’ve wanted to make this tool for a long time. I recently saw a video by Mr. Wooppe and decided to build my own

Looks interesting retract could do with a damper though. Worth looking into.

That’s pretty cool.

Shame the new improved forum does not allow the posting of videos.

Why is the in feed needed on the tool instead of using the cross feed or have I not understood.

crossfeed puts the new cut on, when tool is pushed forward it takes the tool to the same place every time.

It does.  Little finicky though.   Just paste the plain video URL into it’s own blank line.     The video is inserted after the submit button is pressed. Described in the Help section.

Looks like Celso Ari followed the procedure but his paste operation inserted and markers.   Not sure why but the new forum seems more inclined to import HTML commands as text when pasting.   I’ve not been able to replicate it.

Or perhaps just limit the travel of the tool to retract only say 5mm instead of 20 or so. (Unless cutting up to a larger shoulder!) Not such a clunk at the end that way.

One big advantage of this unit would be you can screwcut at 500 or even 1000 RPM and not have to worry about being quick enough to manually retract the tool at the end of the cut. Saves a lot of time on longer threads and tooling cuts steel much better at those kinds of speeds.  (Provided your lathe is solid enough to handle it.)

A slightly less sophisticated solution may be to use a flip-up toolholder.

A while ago I made a modified George Thomas extracting screw cutting holder which when it reached a stop automatically released the tool and spring loaded extracted.

What we need is for Graham Meek to come up with a version of the Ainjest attachment, which automatically opened the half nuts at the end of the thread, and ensured that they were re-engaged at the appropriate position. No idea how that bit worked. According to the link, you could cut 12 tpi at 1200 rpm, which must have been exciting
