My REK-O-KUT audio turntable with hysteresus synchronous motor runs at half speed for the first 10 minutes of start-up; then operates normal speed (600 rpm). Why?

          Interesting turntable Hank yes

Do you mean that they designed it to run at half-speed for the first 10mins, or that it's a fault?

If designed … It may be intended to warm everything up, gently.

The oil on the spindle bearings might be getting a bit gummy. As it warms up, it frees up. They do say that it has a low torque motor. I'm not sure why they would see that as an advantage.

Had exactly the same problem on my Bang and Olufsen, stripped it and lubed the motor a couple of times, but it soon went back to its old ways. stripped it again, took the bearings out of the motor, they are the sintered bronze porous type which are impregnated with oil. Soaked them in meths and cleaned them with brake cleaner until no more dirt came out, then dried them off, soaked them in sewing machine oil, refitted them. Perfect!! The oil polymerises over time and goes gummy as John said above, you need to get it all out of the bearing and re oil.

Good logical answers, John & Phil

But … I guess the missing question was:

"half speed for the first 10 minutes" … or,

"some slow speed for about the first 10 minutes"

                question

I, perhaps mistakenly, took Hank's figures literally.

                MichaelG.
